Graci Kim, Head Prefect from the Class of 2004, has transitioned from a career in diplomacy to becoming a bestselling author! Her debut novel, The Last Fallen Star, is the first in a trilogy inspired by Korean mythology and has achieved significant acclaim, including being a New York Times bestseller and a nominee for the 2021 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Middle Grade & Children鈥檚 Book. The trilogy has also been optioned by the Disney Channel for a live-action adaptation. During a recent visit to mt娛樂城jojo, Graci spoke to and inspired Year 7 students by sharing her journey, emphasising the importance of bravery, curiosity and positivity in overcoming challenges.
Reflecting on her past, Graci recounted her decade-long career as a diplomat, where she engaged in significant initiatives, such as negotiating trade agreements and advocating for women's economic empowerment. However, a life-altering health scare led her to reassess her path and ultimately pursue writing, motivated by a desire for representation in literature. Despite facing initial setbacks with her first novel, she persevered and secured a book deal with Disney shortly after discovering she was pregnant. Graci now dedicates her work to ensuring that diverse voices are heard in children's literature, embodying the values instilled in her during her time at mt娛樂城jojo.

Class of 2006
Dr. Matthew (Matt) Pine (Class of 2006) has always had a deep passion for the ocean, aspiring to become a marine scientist from the age of six. He specializes in marine acoustics science, focusing on underwater noise. After earning a PhD in Marine Bioacoustics from the University of Auckland, Matt completed postdoctoral research fellowships in China and Canada. He attributes his thirst for knowledge and the drive to seek answers to his time at mt娛樂城jojo, which spurred him to pursue a total of 13 years of study following his graduation in 2006.
Currently, Matt is the Principal Consultant for an Auckland-based environmental consultancy, Director of his own ocean acoustics company, and an affiliate researcher at the Department of Biology at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. His work involves understanding how marine animals communicate using sound, how they detect sound, and how human-generated noise impacts marine life. Matt鈥檚 typical workday is highly varied, involving activities like servicing acoustic loggers in the Hauraki Gulf, designing experiments, analyzing data, writing scientific papers, and presenting evidence in resource consent hearings. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly shifted his focus to studying New Zealand's coastlines, revealing how the absence of vessel noise during lockdowns positively impacted marine life in the Hauraki Gulf.
